Louisville, KY – Newly arrived Louisville theatre company White Flag Performance Group partners with
Company OutCast to create and present OCCHI APERTI: EYES OPEN, a new devised work,
February 10-22 at the Tim Faulkner Gallery (991 Logan Street, Louisville, KY 40203).
OCCHI APERTI: EYES OPEN follows three women as they pursue "wake therapy"–staying awake for
36+ hours to reboot their bodies out of depression. While it may sound crazy, Marigold, Eve, and Sasha
are willing to try anything to feel better and get their lives back. Embracing the absurdity of their
situation, these women push through the strange realities brought on by lack of sleep, using humor and
compassion to battle their illness and find a new beginning.
Helmed by White Flag Performance Group Artistic Director Rowen Haigh Mahoney, OCCHI APERTI:
EYES OPEN is an original collaboratively created play. Using improvisation, writing prompts, and
discussion, the ensemble has generated material–both written and physical–that they then structured
and shaped into a script.
“OCCHI APERTI isn’t about wake therapy, per se,” says Haigh Mahoney. “It’s about bringing
depression and mental illness–especially for women–into the light in a way that address how human it
is. It’s messy and weird and unsettling, and people deal with it in all sorts of ways–very often, with
deflection and with humor. This is intentionally a funny piece, but, on a serious note, I also hope it
shows other people who struggle with mental illness that they’re not alone.”
“We partnered with Company OutCast on this production because their mission is very much in line
with the ethos of the play and with White Flag’s mission,” says Haigh Mahoney. “Giving voices to
people and stories that aren’t always heard–as companies, that’s what we both do.”
OCCHI APERTI: EYES OPEN features actors Ebony Gibson, Polina Shafran, and Rachel Vidal. It is
designed by Megan Heinsohn (costumes), Eric Shoemaker (set & lights), and Sean Mahoney (sound).
Rowen Haigh Mahoney directs and Clare Hagan stage manages.
